ABOUT OUR ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT

The City of Hubbard operates its own electrical distribution system throughout the City and portions of Hubbard Township. Although the community does not generate its own power, it is primarily responsible for electric transmission and maintenance of all utility poles, lines, substations, and connections within its geographic service area. As a result of this continual process of system improvements, consumers of the City of Hubbard Electric Department are afforded lower rates than the rates charged in several of the neighboring communities.

The City of Hubbard Electric Department is currently comprised of eight crewmembers under the direction of the Superintendent. The first crew focuses its effort on new construction projects, while the second crew is dedicated to repair and maintenance issues. The Electric crew supports the service relied upon by 3,700 customers-using over 3,750,000-kilowatt hours of electric per month.

The City of Hubbard is involved in a power-purchasing consortium agreement with American Municipal Power of Ohio, Inc. (AMP-Ohio). AMP-Ohio has been organized as a non-profit wholesale power supplier for nearly 90% of the Ohio municipally owned electric utilities—also known as public power systems—since its inception in 1971. AMP-Ohio is owned and governed by its member communities with a focus on providing member assistance and low-cost power supplies.

Likewise, AMP-Ohio serves as an independent project manager for groups of Ohio municipal electric communities participating in "joint ventures" to share ownership of power generating facilities. The City of Hubbard is a member of two such joint ventures-OMEGA JV1 and OMEGA JV5. The 1992 Ohio Municipal Electric Generation Agency Joint Venture 1 project (OMEGA JV1) is a shared ownership of diesel generation facilities in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Similarly, the 1993 OMEGA JV5 project is a hydropower facility at the Belleville Locks and Dam.

The City of Hubbard involvement with AMP-Ohio and the OMEGA joint ventures are the means by which the City of Hubbard Electric Department continually provides superior electric service at competitive prices.
